In the healthcare world, having a strategic foundation is critical for the success and growth of any practice. Organizational strategy is pivotal in creating efficient teams, fostering accountability, and ensuring the practice operates at peak performance. This article delves into the crucial aspects of crafting a strong organizational framework for healthcare practices.

Embracing the “Structure First” Approach

The “Structure First” approach is a cornerstone of strategic organizational planning. This method prioritizes the design of an organization based on the roles necessary for optimal functioning rather than the current staff members who might fill those positions. It is akin to organizing a baseball team where the structure is adapted based on player availability, skill levels, and the desired outcome of the game. A well-thought-out structure provides flexibility and growth potential, essential for thriving practices.

Traditional Org Charts vs. EOS Accountability Charts

The latter offers a more flexible and growth-oriented model when comparing traditional organizational charts to the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) accountability charts. Unlike traditional org charts, which can be rigid and based on hierarchy, EOS accountability charts emphasize clear roles and responsibilities. This fosters a culture of clarity and efficiency, where team members understand their accountabilities and are better aligned with the practice's goals.

Navigating Organizational Growth

As a healthcare practice grows, the quality of management and accountability can be challenged. This is especially true once a practice expands beyond a certain size. A phenomenon known as the “soft belly” can occur in middle management, where visibility is low and accountability may diminish. During such growth, it becomes even more critical to align individuals with roles that match their strengths and to avoid retaining high-salary individuals in positions that do not add value.

In larger organizations, personal relationships, status, and seniority influence career trajectories more than actual performance or fit. This can lead to inefficiencies and misaligned roles. Healthcare practices must, therefore, remain vigilant and realistic about role allocation and employee retention, prioritizing the practice's needs alongside the individual's capacity to fulfill them.

Maximizing Organizational Efficiency

Sometimes, a team's structure must transform from a complex hierarchy to a more streamlined model with fewer, clearer functions to maximize efficiency. This simplifies leadership and increases manageability. It is crucial to address mismatches between a person's skills and role to prevent inefficiency and damage to self-esteem.

Honest evaluations can sometimes reveal that individuals without a clear role may not align with the organization's core values. Such realizations are crucial for maintaining a healthy and efficient organizational structure.

By adopting a “Structure First” approach, aligning organizational growth with efficient management, and focusing on maximizing efficiency through structure and tools, healthcare practices can lay a strong foundation for success.
